The Translatome of Senescent Cells Revealed by Sequencing Actively Translated mRNA
Cellular senescence contributes to aging-related inflammation and tissue dysfunction, yet the role of translational regulation in this process remains incompletely understood. Here, researchers used AHARIBO technology from IMMAGINA Biotechnology to investigate actively translated mRNAs in proliferating, senescent, and late-senescent human fibroblasts. By comparing the translatome with the total transcriptome, the study identified significant changes in translational efficiency, including reduced translation of inflammatory genes, altered codon usage, and sustained translation of specific LINE-1 retrotransposons. The findings reveal how translational regulation shapes cellular senescence and provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying aging-associated inflammation.
