Immagina BioTechnology contributes to the growing field of dark proteome research.


The growing interest in unexplored areas of the human proteome is opening new opportunities to understand biology and discover potential therapeutic targets.

A recent article published in Nature Biotechnology highlights how scientists are studying the so-called “dark proteome”, a collection of previously overlooked protein-like molecules that may play important roles in human health and disease.

Using advanced computational and experimental approaches, researchers have identified thousands of potential new proteins that were missed by traditional methods. Many of these molecules originate from non-canonical open reading frames (ORFs), including small proteins and proteins encoded by RNA sequences previously considered non-coding.

The article describes how researchers are increasingly moving beyond the traditional proteome view towards the broader “translatome”, which includes all genomic RNA molecules that are translated by ribosomes into proteins.
